# Custom OSD Elements
Custom OSD Elements were added in INAV 7.0.0 and expanded in 8.0.0. They are a very useful addition to the INAV OSD. Allowing you to create your own OSD elements, showing data useful to you. You can have a total of 3 (INAV 7.0.0 to 7.1.2) or 8 (INAV 8.0.0 onwards) custom elements.
The custom OSD elements work along side the programming framework, to provide you with the information you want. The data is calculated in the programming framework. Then stored and accessed from a global variable (INAV 7.0.0 to 7.1.2) or directly accessed from the logic condition (INAV 8.0.0 onwards). This allows you to show things like the state of your VTOL or the altitude in a different measurement unit, as examples.
Each custom OSD element has three configurable spaces, plus an activation condition. You don't need to use all three configuration spaces, and the element can always be active. The three configurable spaces can either be a symbol from the OSD font, data from the programming framework, or text.

## Creating a custom OSD element
In this section, we will create some custom OSD elements, using the examples described above. Each example will show something new. So it's worth checking both out.
### Example 1: Showing the transition state of a VTOL
In this example, we will use the custom OSD element to show a basic VTOL position indicator. This could be done using the switch indicators. But this will give more control over what is displayed. For the example, I am using a switch on Ch7 to change the VTOL state. `HIGH` is forward flight mode, `LOW` is hover mode, and `MID` is the transition.
Firstly we need to set up the programming framework to detect the switch position.
